Tracking Custom Conversions in Meta Ads Manager
Digital Marketing
Feb 07
Meta Standard Events are a powerful way to track common user actions on your website, making them particularly useful for ecommerce businesses. However, if you’re looking to monitor activities outside these predefined categories, exploring additional options becomes essential. While setting up custom conversions in Meta is straightforward, identifying which campaigns and ads are driving those results requires a more detailed setup process.
Keep reading to discover how to integrate custom conversions into your Ads Manager column view for precise performance tracking.
What Are the Benefits of Instituting This Process?
There’s no need to reference a conversion key when reporting
At Adtaxi, we rely on conversion keys to map conversions to Meta Standard Events, streamlining the setup process for new client campaigns—a crucial efficiency for any marketing agency. Binding conversions to these Standard Events ensures a faster, more organized approach. However, there is a slight catch when analyzing data in Ads Manager—you’ll need a reference key to interpret your columns. For example, Standard Events like ‘Search’ or ‘Subscribe’ could represent anything from a specific page visit to the initiation of a chat session, depending on how they’re bound.
Custom Conversion Performance can be viewed at the Campaign, Ad Set, or even Ad Level
Many marketers will set up custom conversions within Meta and stop there. Sure, the aggregate view of total conversions can be seen within Events Manager – a top-down view – but what about at a granular level? With more complex setups the need arises to view custom conversions at the Campaign, Ad set, and even Ad Level. This is crucial to gauge performance when tracking conversions that aren’t your run-of-the-mill events. With custom conversions in your Ads Manager columns, you can view which campaign objectives generate conversions, which audience configurations drive performance, and which creative combinations influence user behavior.
How to Bind Standard Events to Custom Conversions in Ads Manager
–Go to Meta Business Settings – Navigate to the Data Sources dropdown and select Custom Conversions.
-Create a New Custom Conversion – Click the Add button and choose Create a new custom conversion.
–Set the Conversion Rules – A new window will open. Give your conversion a name (e.g., “Engaged Visitor” for users visiting three or more pages in a session). Select a pixel or dataset in the Data source dropdown. For conversions on a website, select Website in the Action source dropdown.
–Bind to Standard Events (Optional) – While you can create a custom conversion entirely within Meta, you can also link it to Standard Events if you’re using a tag manager. To do this, select the event you want to attach to your custom conversion from the Event dropdown.
–Set the Rules – Enter the URL or specific criteria that will trigger the conversion in the Rules field.
–Finalize Your Conversion – Click Create, and your custom conversion is ready!
–Connect to an Ad Account – After creating the custom conversion, go to the Connected Assets tab and assign it to the relevant Ad Account.
That’s it! You’ve successfully created and linked a custom conversion to your ad campaigns.
How to Add the Custom Conversion to Your Columns in Ads Manager
-Open Ads Manager and click on the Columns dropdown menu, then select Customize Columns.
-In the window that appears, find and click Custom Conversions in the left-hand menu. You’ll see your Custom Conversion listed as a metric you can add.
-Select it, apply the changes, and you’re all set! You can now view your Custom Conversions for your Campaigns, Ad Sets, and Ads.
Custom conversions are more than just an advanced feature—they’re a game-changer for marketers looking to gain deeper insights and optimize campaign performance. By incorporating custom conversions into your Ads Manager column view, you turn raw data into actionable intelligence. You’ll not only track conversions with precision but also understand which campaigns, audiences, and creative assets drive meaningful results. For any marketer looking to go beyond basic metrics and truly fine-tune their strategy, this setup unlocks the clarity needed to make informed decisions that deliver measurable success. Take the time to implement this process, and you’ll empower your campaigns with the insights to outperform the competition.
